Abstract

957,310. Moulding hollow articles. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. July 11, 1960, No. 24128/60. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B6 and B8] A sheet 48 of polystyrene which may be direct from an extrusion machine and tensioned by spring-pressed rollers 50 is fed by clamps 58, Fig. 4, which grip the sheet during their forward movement by an eccentrically mounted wheel 66, to a position between platens 18, 28. During this movement the sheet is heated by a radiant heater 94. The platen 28 is then lowered to first clamp the sheet between a fixed part 152, Fig. 9, and a plate 156, and then after further lowering of the platen, a plunger 50 stretches the sheet and shears off the sheet between flanges 178, 180. Before the platen 28 completes its downward movement, the mould halves 118, 120 of the female mould are brought together by cams. The sheet is finally shaped by blowing air through passages 192. The flow of air is diffused by a fabric covering 194. After moulding, the lower platen is moved to the right (shown dotted in Fig. 1) and ejector pins 98 are raised between the separate halves of the female mould to lift the moulded articles, and simultaneously a blast of air from orifices 102 blows the articles on a conveyer (not shown). The scrap sheet is wound up on roll 108.
