957,211. Joining veneers. H. KUPER, [trading as HEINRICH KUPER MASCHINEN UND WERKZEUGE FUER DIE HOLZINDUSTRIE]. April 21, 1961 [April 23, 1960; March 15, 1961; March 22, 1961], No. 14414/61. Heading B5K. Apparatus for securing adhesive strips to an assembly of veneer strips comprises means for unrolling the adhesive strips 18a so as to orientate them transversely to the direction of the grain of the veneers, means for pressing the strips when so orientated on to the veneer assembly, a drum 15 for conveying the assembly of veneers to the pressing means, and means for applying a vacuum from the interior of the drum 15 to the underside of the veneer assembly to retain the veneer on the drum surface whilst being so conveyed thereon. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a perforated hollow shaft 11 is connected to an exhauster and is surrounded by the perforated, rotatable drum 15A which is partly covered over the whole length thereof by a metal or synthetic plastic plate 16. Two plates 13, 14 (Fig. 1, not shown) are adjustably mounted on the shaft 11 to vary the effective drum surface. Narrow veneers to be joined are placed at the level of an edge 16a and are conveyed by the rotating drum 15 to pressure rollers 17a, 17b (the latter not shown) which apply the adhesive paper strips 18a to connect one veneer arranged at right angles to its direction of feed with the subsequent veneer. The veneers are removed from the drum by a shoot 19. In a modification, Fig. 3, a rotatable, perforated drum 20 is mounted in a suction box 10d and is encompassed by a working plate 22 covering the box 10d. At least one pressure roller 17 is resiliently mounted and is adjustable on an axle 26. A reinforcing thread 27a may be positioned beneath each adhesive paper strip. A lead roller 28 mounted on a resilient lever 28b contacts the strip in advance of the pressure roller 17 and is driven at a greater speed than the roller 17 to cause the individual veneers to close up before joining.
