Abstract

A method of making a polymer composition comprises kneading together a molten polymer of ethylene, propylene, t-butene, isobutylene, or a mixture thereof, a water-insoluble linear polyamide resin having recurring amide groups as integral parts of the polymer chain under heat and a pressure of at least 400 lbs. per sq. in. in the presence of fine particles of a chemically inert and physically active reinforcing filler, the ratio of hydrocarbon resin to polyamide being between 95.5 and 25.75 by weight, and the filler being 1/2 to 10% by weight of the total mixture and having essentially all particles smaller than 325 mesh. Specified fillers are colloidal silica, finely ground mica, hydrated calcium silicate, hydrated silica, anhydrous calcium silicate, diatomaceous silica, alumina, titania, bentonite, iron oxide, magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate, carbon black, anhydrous barium sulphate and anhydrous zinc oxide. The examples describe compositions made from (1), (3) and (4) polyethylene, nylon-6 and collodal silica; (2) polyethylene, nylon-6 and (a) anhydrous colloidal silica; (b) water-ground mica; (c) precipitated calcium silicate and (d) hydrated silica; (5) isotactic polypropylene, polyhexamethylene adipamide and anhydrous calcium silicate; (6) polyisobutylene, polyhexamethylene sebacamide and dried, dehydrated calcium silicate; (7) branch polyethylene, polyhexamethylene adipamide and hydrated silica and (8) poly-l-butene, nylon-6 and finely groud mica. The compositions may be moulded into bottles, spun into filaments, laminated in foil form to substrates or used as coating or surfacing materials.
