A worm wheel 13 having in its periphery a series of hemispherical sockets 16 which loosely receive balls 15 retained by means such as a fixed ring 17 is engaged by a worm 11 having a variable-pitch thread of semicircular section, each turn of which includes an arc of zero lead so that the wheel 13 is intermittently indexed by one tooth-space for each rotation of the worm. There may be a hole 18 in the base of each socket 16 to provide a pocket for lubricant. In a modification dispensing with the ring 17 the balls are held in their sockets by fingers on plates fixed to the wheel 13.
