955,568. Advancing mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Aug. 16, 1962 [Aug. 18, 1961], No. 29906/61. Heading E1E. An advancing mine roof support comprises a series of frames 1 each having a cantilever extension 7 which is automatically projected towards a newly exposed coal face when the cutter 3 undercuts same to release an external force acting thereon. The extension is retracted to preload an energy-storing device such as a helical spring or a length of elastic material when the frame is advanced. The extension is advanced forwardly and upwardly towards the mine roof by suitable guides provided in the roof cap 5, limiting stops being also provided.
