Abstract

A process for the production of chloroprene comprises dehydrochlorinating 3, 4-dichlorbutene-1 with aqueous alkali in the presence of a water-immiscible organic liquid other than 3, 4-dichlorbutene-1 having a boiling point above that of chloroprene (59.4 DEG C. at 760 mm.Hg.) in an amount sufficient to prevent excessive foaming of the reaction mixture, and removing chloroprene produced by the reaction from the reaction zone in the liquid phase. Suitable organic liquids include aromatic, hydroaromatic and paraffinic hydrocarbons and also chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichlorbutanes. The temperature may be from 80-100 DEG C. and the pressure from 0-10 p.s.i.g. An inert gaseous diluent may be used as may a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. NO, Na2S, picric acid or and alkyl sulphide. Batchwise or continuous operation may be used.
