[Also in Divisions D1 and H2] A combined electric motor and change-speed gear for a washing and spin drying machine (see Division D1) comprises a pole-changing electric motor 13 having a driving shaft 28 slidden axially against the bias of a spring 24 on energization of a stationary solenoid 25 to attract an armature 27, so that a frustoconically surfaced friction clutch disc 30 fast with the driving shaft is engaged with a disc 34 spring-mounted upon the ring gear 41 of a simple planetary gear having its sun gear 31 fast with the driving shaft, a direct drive to a planet carrier 42 and an output shaft 39 then being established. On de-energization of the solenoid 25, the spring 24 slides the driving shaft 28 to disengage the clutch disc 30 from the ring gear 41 &c., springs 37 surrounding pins 35 mounting the disc 34 upon a housing 38 fast with the ring gear 41 then engaging an external frusto-conical surface 36 on the latter disc with a correspondingly shaped brake surface 35 in the motor housing 23. The ring gear 41 is thus stationed, and a step-down drive is imparted through the planet pinions 40 to the output shaft 39. Automatic ratio shift is effected by the washing machine programming controller 8 acting through a cam disc 29 upon a switch through which current is fed to the solenoid 25. The programming controller 8 also acts through a cam disc 21 upon a motor reversing switch 21<SP>1</SP> and upon a pole-changer 20 effective to adjust the speed of the motor.
