Abstract

955,191. Geophysical exploration. JERSEY PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO. Jan.24, 1962 [April 19, 1961], No. 2732/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading G1W. A method of geophysical exploration relies on the fact that gravitational attraction of the sun and moon causes periodic movements of the land masses which are somewhat similar to movements of the waters of the earth and thus are referred to as earth tides. Sensitive gravity meters may be used to measure the earth tides at a plurality of spaced survey locations, corrections being applied, if necessary, for differences caused by the differing latitudes and longitudes of the survey locations. All the measurements may be effected simultaneously or alternatively simultaneous measurements may be made at one or more survey locations and at a base station, the measurements then being taken with different survey locations and the same base station so that the final results may all be reduced to a corresponding basis. The peak amplitudes of the earth tide waves may be plotted on a map at points corresponding to the survey locations. Alternatively measurements may be made by means of sensitive tilt detectors, arrows being plotted on a map of a length and direction corresponding to the magnitude and direction of the tilt at the various survey locations. In further methods the rate of change of the earth tide wave at a selected time is measured or other earth deformation characteristics or characteristics of the wave form are selected. Alternatively the time that the peak of the earth tide passes through a base station and through spaced survey locations are determined and compared with the calculated time that the earth tide should pass from the base station to the survey stations.
