A sensing device to detect the absence or damage of cigarettes in a group comprises three banks of spring-urged feelers 228 having square section parts 224 provided with transverse slots 227 so that when all the feelers engage the ends of the cigarettes, light from a lamp 212 will be transmitted to a lightsensitive or other device 218. A single lamp may co-operate with a separate cell for each bank of feelers or a single cell with an appropriate arrangement of mirrors &c. The indication may control signal means or it may stop the whole machine.
