Abstract

954,873. Laminates. DOW CHEMICAL CO. May 3, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 16981/62. Heading B5N. Laminated sheets, particularly for use in packaging, comprise an oriented or unoriented sheet of an alkenyl aromatic polymer bonded to each side of a sheet of a polyolefin such as polythene or polypropylene. The alkenyl aromatic polymer is preferably polystyrene but may be a copolymer of styrene or a polymer or copolymer of α-methyl styrene, aryl-methyl or di-methyl styrene, or a mono- or di-chlorostyrene, including copolymers with vinylidene chloride or acrylonitrile, or with polyfunctional materials such as divinylbenzene, or graft copolymers with elastomeric polymers. The laminates may be prepared by hot-pressing between rollers a pair of polystyrene &c. sheets on either side of a freshly extruded sheet of polyolefin, or by superposing the constituent sheets, heating, and pressing between rollers or otherwise. An example describes the lamination of two 3 mil. oriented sheets of polystyrene to an extruded 2.3 mil. sheet of polythene, and the vacuum-forming of a single piece of the laminate into an integral box and lid in which the laminated material itself forms the hinge. The laminates are stated to combine transparency with toughness and flexibility.
