Abstract

954,352. Steering motor vehicles. HYDROSTEER Ltd. June 29, 1960 [Sept. 14, 1959], No. 31303/59. Heading B7H. In a motor vehicle power assisted steering mechanism having a follow-up action, there is provided a power control valve having resilient means biasing it to its neutral position, the biasing force increasing with the displacement of the valve, means being provided to reduce the biasing force as the valve reaches its limiting displacement. A manual steering control comprises a steering shaft 6, a worm 19 and nut 20 provided with circulating balls 21, the nut being carried by a rocker arm 22 on a rocker shaft 23 coupled to the steering transmission. The nut is connected by a rod 26 to a double acting piston 24 and a limited amount of axial play is provided in the steering shaft to operate a valve 1 controlling the supply of pressure fluid to the piston. Liquid is supplied to the valve through connection 3 and returned to the reservoir through connection 4, there being means to convey liquid to each side of the piston. The valve comprises a housing 2, a spool 1 provided with a ball 5 engaging a groove in the steering shaft 6, and an insert 16<SP>1</SP>. The spool has control faces 9, 10, 13, 14 which may co-operate with closing rings 11 and 12 and faces 15 and 16 on the insert 16<SP>1</SP> respectively. Spring rings 17 and 18 bias the spool to the neutral position, Fig. 1, in which liquid can flow past the faces 13 and 14 and past the rings 11 and 12 to the return connection 4. When a steering movement is commenced, the valve spool is moved by the reaction against the pressure of spring 17, Fig. 2 (or 18 if in the opposite direction). The face 9 co-operates with the ring 11 to direct the fluid to the appropriate side of the piston and the faces 14 and 16 come together to seal that side of the piston from exhaust. At the limiting position, when faces 14 and 16 are in contact, the fluid pressures acting on the spool 1 are unbalanced (owing to the change in areas contacted by the fluid) to provide a bias opposing that of the spring.
