Abstract

The invention comprises lysine 4-hydroxybutyrate and its preparation by reacting butyrolactone with lysine in an aqueous medium. The compound is a sedative, potentiates conventional anaesthetics, and assists in the building-up of proteins. It may be administered orally, rectally or by injection, in the form of pharmaceutical preparations (e.g. tablets, powders, syrups, solutions or suppositories) containing it in association with a vehicle.
