A weft straightener for a fabric web is controlled according to the time interval between the response of two detectors, one at each edge of the web, to marks made simultaneously on both edges at a stage when the weft was at right angles to the warp. The marks may be made on the loom by a device triggered by the weft thread counter and may be of iron powder mixed with stamping dye, detected by capacitance pick-ups, a radio-active substance for radiation detectors or distinctive colour spots for photo-electric detection. Alternatively, a weft thread treated with a non-visible tracer substance, e.g. radio-active, may be inserted periodically. The straightener may comprise rolls at a variable angle to each other.
