Abstract

<PICT:0953054/C1/1> Apparatus for mixing molten glass flowing from an inlet 11 along a channel 10 comprises six vertical stirrers in successive pairs, the stirrers in each pair counter-rotating, the first and third pairs 15, 16 and 19, 20 urging the material to flow between them while the second pair 17, 18 urge the material towards the walls of the channel. The stirrer blades may be spaced apart or may overlap, or the stirrers may be helices, see Fig. 2 (not shown), the stirrers 15, 17, 19 all being left-hand while 16, 18, 20 are all right hand, so that the first and third pairs urge the material downward and the second pair, upward. In a wider channel the second pair of stirrers may be closer together than the other pairs, see Fig. 3 (not shown). The apparatus is of particular use in mixing a coloured glass into colourless glass.
