Abstract

952,739. Moulding pipe couplings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 19, 1960 [Aug. 29, 1959], No. 29571/59. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A flexible pipe coupling comprises an elastomeric tube e.g. of rubber or plastics, having its ends shaped for connection to pipes, a corrugated central portion and at least one reinforcing layer of non-metallic weftless cord fabric cords which extend substantially from end to end of the coupling across the valleys and peaks of the corrugation. The reinforcement may be arranged longitudinally or helically or in two helical layers which are oppositely biased. Encircling bands 9, Fig. 4, of textile cord or fabric which may be impregnated with an elastomer, may be provided in the corrugation valley portions. The end flanges 8 can be provided with bolt holes or couplings without flanges may be bonded to the external surface of connecting pipes during moulding. The flanges 8 may be expanded mechanically prior to moulding during which end plates 30, 31 apply axial compression whilst fluid pressure is applied through orifices 34 or by means of an inflatable liner. Alternatively a tubing preformed with corrugations may be moulded to form end flanges. Annular rings of uncured rubber may be located against the end flanges during moulding to assist flange formation. Specification 952,738 is referred to.
