A machine for hulling rice, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a frame 10, a stationary roll 12 mounted on an axle 15 rotating in the frame and a displaceable roll 13 mounted on an axle 20 rotatably mounted on a lever arm 19 pivoted, at its lower end, to the base 16 of the frame and, at its lower end to a nut 34 engaging screw threads on one end of a shaft 30 rotatable by a pulley 26, through control mechanism comprising gears and clutch members in a casing 29, so as to move the roll 13 towards the roll 12 automatically, at a controlled speed to maintain a predetermined pressure on rice grains fed, from a hopper 38 into the nip between the rolls and thus compensate for the wearing down of the abradable surfaces of the rolls. A spring 37 urges the roll 13 towards the roll 12, but the control mechanism prevents approach closer than a desired limiting distance and, moreover, stops the approaching movement if an excessive amount of unhulled grain or obstructing foreign matter tends to choke the machine. The rolls are rotatable in opposite directions by a driven belt 27 engaging pulleys 21 and 22 on the parallel axles 15 and 20. This belt also drives the pulley 26 and is tensioned by a pulley 28. The roll 13 may also be moved away from or towards the roll 12 by manual rotation of a wheel or handle 50. The roll 13 and lever arm may be moved by fluid-operated mechanism comprising a cylinder and piston actuated by the pressure of water or oil supplied by a pump driven by the belt or by compressed air from a compressor driven likewise.
