Abstract
952,200. Thermionic engines. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE A.G. June 23, 1960 [Sept. 15, 1959], No. 22102/60. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G6] In a nuclear reactor electricity is produced directly by thermionic emission from the surface of a fuel element to a collector electrode, the space between the fuel element and the collector electrode being evacuated. Fig. 1 shows a fuel element which may be inserted in a reactor of known construction. The fuel 1 is enclosed in a jacket 2 of electron-emitting material and is surrounded by an anode 3, the inside surface of which is polished to reflect heat and the exterior of which is cooled, for example by a rare gas flowing through the passage separating the anode from the moderator 4. The space between the anode and cathode may be evacuated to a pressure of about 10<SP>-2</SP> mm. by a pump (not shown) connected to the head 11. The base 14 of the fuel element rests on a current collector 15 set in an insulating ring 17 mounted in the supporting grid 6 of the moderator structure. At the top of the fuel element is a current collecting ring 9 connected to the anode 3. Each fuel element may comprise a number, e.g. three, of thermionic cells connected in series, the cathode 2 of one cell being connected to the anode 3 of the next cell with insulating rings 12, 13 provided at the connection and also serving as distance rings. The electron-emitting material may be thorium, barium impregnated with tungsten, calcium deposited on tungsten, or carbides such as titanium or zirconium carbide, or oxides such as ThO 2 , BaO/SrO, or silicides.
