[Also in Division D1] Sheets of rigid material (e.g. glass) and sheets or continuous lengths of flexible material have a decorative patterned effect applied thereto by passing the material through the surface of a pool of water on which surface floats colouring, filler and transparent breaker elements. The material may be precoated with varnish. A suitable apparatus comprises a tray-like container comprising two substantially horizontal portions 14 and 15 disposed at different levels and separated by an inclined portion 16 to form two pools 17 and 18, pool 18 being deeper than pool 17, pipe 19 for supplying water and nozzles 29, 32 and 33 for applying the colouring, breaker and filler elements to the surface of the water. A sluice gate 34 is provided to impede the flow of water and arm 35 reduces the surface area of the elements. In the case of a sheet the material is passed downwardly through the water surface in pool 18, the elements remaining on the surface are removed and then the material is passed upwardly through the water surface by, e.g., a platform ; and in the case of a continuous length, the material is passed downwardly through an elongated tubular'member in pool 18 and then passed upwardly through the water surface while being exposed to same.
