A railway vehicle 10, Fig. 1, for transporting a freight container 18, comprises a centre sill structure 12, a bolster structure 14 secured to the sill adjacent each end, conventional centre plate and king-pin means (not shown) for securing the bolsters to bogies 16, rollers 20 carried at the ends of the bolsters and engageable by the bottom of the container 18, a platform 36 slidable longitudinally on the sill through a distance of 20 to 40 inches, an hydraulic cushioning device 26, similar to that described in Specification 951,094, interposed between the interior of the sill and the platform and having a stroke length of 20 to 40 inches, and a pin 42 on the platform to engage in a complementary recess in the bottom of the container when the latter is resting on the rollers 20. The follower members 32, 33, Fig. 4, of the cushion device 26 engage stops 34 secured to and depending from the bottom of the platform 36 and pairs of lugs 30 on the inner walls of the sill 12, between which lugs the stops 34 are normally disposed. The lower ends of the stops 34 are secured to a channel member 144 and the stops can move in slots 73 formed in the top of the sill which latter is formed of two Z-shaped members 28. The springs 72 of the device 26 are supported on carrier plates 130, Fig. 5, secured to bottom flanges 94 of the sill 12 and by channels 138 on the inner walls of the sill. The platform 36 is provided with hook members 38 slidably engaging guides 40 secured to the outer sides of the sill. The bolsters 14 are each comprised of spaced webs 100 secured to upper and lower plates 102, 104 the latter being connected to centre plates 106 connectible in known manner with the trucks 16. The rollers 20 are each mounted on an axle 114, Fig. 1, carried in a bolster end-plate 110 and a U-shaped frame 112 secured to the end-plate. Each roller has a flange 22 to centre the container on the rollers. End sills, e.g. 54, Fig. 6, are provided at one or both ends of the sill 12 and are provided with vertical guard-plates 156, 158, 304, 302, on each side of a passage 306, over the sill. The guard-plate 158 mounts a hand brake 44 and the plate 156 carries a ladder. The container 18 is provided with crane cable attachment devices 80.
