Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0951739/C2/1> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group. The compounds may be prepared by reacting an N,N1-di-(alkali metal)-alkylene-bis-(ethyl carbamate), in which the nitrogen atoms are bonded to adjacent carbon atoms of the alkylene group, with a cyanogen halide in a highly polar solvent, several such solvents being specified. The alkali metal derivatives of the alkylene-bis-(alkyl carbamates) may be prepared by treatment of the carbamate with an alkali metal. Example 1 describes the reaction of sodium with ethylene-bis-(ethyl carbamate) followed by reaction with cyanogen chloride to produce 1,3-dicyano-2-imidazolidinone.ALSO:Compositions having plant growth regulating properties contain as an essential constituent a compound of the general formula <FORM:0951739/A5-A6/1> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group (see Division C2). The compositions may be in solid or liquid form and may contain materials beneficial for use in horticulture and agriculture such as pesticides, soil conditioning materials and plant nutrients. The solid compositions may contain inert pulverulent diluents. The liquid compositions may contain inert liquid diluents such as water and organic liquids, and surface-active agents. Example 2 describes a seed dressing comprising china clay and 1,3-dicyano-2-imidazolidinone.
