Abstract

951,483. Extruding rubber and synthetic plastic tubing. BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 15, 1962 [Nov. 22, 1961], No. 41752/61. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A process for the continuous production of braided hose comprises extruding a tube of elastomeric material on to a mandrel which extends from the extruder into the tube and from which pressure fluid escapes through perforations to inflate and support the tube during the subsequent braiding operation. The elastomeric material is a natural or synthetic rubber or a rubber-like material. Appropriate materials together with appropriate additives and fillers are listed in the Specification. The elastomer may be vulcanized before or after braiding in annular chambers movable along the mandrel and coaxial with it. Silica or asbestos fibres or glass fabric may be used to fireproof and/or to reinforce the elastomer. The extruded tube may have a textile covering and/or a spiral wire winding applied before or after braiding. The body of the mandrel is smaller in diameter than the inside of the tube and admits air at 5 to 100 1b./sq. inch pressure into the intervening space through a large number of holes or slots. This air is contained between a back flange at the extruder end and a similar flange or alternative seal at the mandrel top. The latter seal may include a valve to regulate the pressure. The braiding, which is of glass or synthetic plastic fibres or, preferably, high tensile steel wire, is wrapped around at about 55 degrees angle to the longitudinal axis of the hose by a braiding machine mounted on a trolley which is movable along the length of the mandrel.
