Abstract

A flow wrapping system for wrapping of serially grouped products 1 on a production line having a direction of flow comprises a wrapping mechanism having a packaging material feed 4 and a product infeed, the product infeed being adapted to deliver the product in product groups to the wrapping mechanism, with the product groups lying in a column extending in the direction of flow of the production line; the wrapping mechanism comprising a fold box means 2 configured as an open-topped channel having a floor and side walls and extending in the direction of flow, which fold box serves, in use, to fold the packaging material 3 around the product groups. The fold box channel has a broad entrance and narrows in the direction of flow. Pushers 5 on a continuous chain drive 6 propel the groups of products 1 (such as biscuits, sweets or tablets) through the channel. Downstream of the fold box are a primary end sealing unit 7, longitudinal seam sealing rollers 8,9, turnover rollers 10 to fold the longitudinal seam against the tubular wrapper and a secondary end sealing unit 11 to consolidate the transverse seals and cut the wrapper into consecutive product group packages. The production line slopes upwardly in the direction of flow. Suction means at the fold box 2 pull the wrapping material against the side walls.
