[Also in Division B6] A stapling device for use on rotary printing presses for automatically shaping and inserting staples in travelling webs of paper or the like comprises a stapling cylinder 8 mounted for rotation about a stationary cam member 28 adapted to actuate a punch 44, the punch being located in an eccentrically positioned bore 32 formed in a cylindrical portion 81 which is provided with a circumferential recess 55 for cooperation with a rotary staple-forming disc 9, the staple-forming operation being effected at a point independent of the point whereat the driving-in operation of the staples is effected. The punch 44 is arranged with its ends slidable in bushes 32, 41 secured to the cylindrical portion 81, the central portion 48 of the punch being slotted to accommodate the cam 28 which is mounted on a shaft 29, the cam engaging with a roller 49 pinned to the punch; the angular position of the cam may be adjusted by rotating the shaft by means of a bush 30. In operation, wire is fed to a position 12, Fig. 1, so that a U-shaped staple is formed by the co-operation of the disc 9, the circumferential recess 55 and a driving head portion 45 of the punch 44. The formed staple is then carried around by the stapling cylinder until a position is reached whereby the shape of the cam 28 permits the punch to drive the staple under the action of compressed springs 53, 54, through a web of paper 1 and into engagement with a closing die 7 arranged on a cylinder 6. The cylinder 6 is driven via a universal joint 22 from the drive for the printing machine. Gears 65 are provided on the shaft 56 carrying the disc 9 for driving the wire feed. A second stapling cylinder 8<SP>1</SP> and co-operating disc 9 may be provided as shown in Fig. 3.
