Abstract

951,346. Boundary layer control. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO. Ltd., and POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Jan. 7, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39082/61. Heading F2R. [Also in Division B7] An aircraft (Fig. 3) has a foreplane 13 of circular cross-section, circulation being effected by blowing (Fig. 4) or suction (Fig. 6) or a combination of the two (Fig. 5). As shown in Fig. 4, the aerofoil has four slots or rows of holes 24-27 through which air is blown in a direction to generate lift, and a slot 28 through which air is blown in the reverse direction. The lift can be varied by varying the total airflow (valve 31) or by differentially varying the supply to the slots 27, 28. Suction may additionally be applied over the lower rear quadrant 21a (Fig. 5), or, as in Fig. 6, suction may be used alone, on areas 21b the lift being varied by providing a flap 39 which can be moved circumferentially around the aerofoil, or which is fixed to the aerofoil which itself rotates. Each aerofoil may be hinged (Fig. 3) to retract rearwardly or forwardly, or may retract telescopically (Fig. 7, not shown).
