Abstract
951,249. Typewriters etc.; printing surfaces. ADDRESSOGRAPH-MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. Oct. 13, 1960 [Oct. 27, 1959], No. 35108/60. Headings B6C and B6F. [Also in Division E2] A printing machine comprises fixed information printing plates and selectively settable typewheels from which information is printed in code and ordinary characters. Impression is effected by a reciprocal roller mounted in a printing head pivotal into an operative position over the printing elements. Fixed information printing plates 61, Fig. 2, are mounted on resiliently supported anvils 56, 58 preferably by means of flexible retainer means while variable information is set on typewheels 63 by actuation of keys 66. Keyboard. Index setting.-The typewheels 63 have flat portions 170, Fig. 10, each of which contain a raised character and a corresponding code marking, and are set by racks 151 engaging integral gears 135. Keys 66 preferably of nylon fit over plates 183, Fig. 14, which by a cut-out 191 engage a lug 154 on the corresponding racks 151. The plates 183 slide in slots 67 of a panel 64 and are guided by slide blocks 168, 169 in the control panel. An indicator strip 68 is attached to the slide block and is clamped between strips 196, 197 so that when a key 66 is moved against a selected value on the panel 64 the corresponding flat 170 is positioned at the printing station and the strip 68 indicates what is set. The keys are aligned in position by engagement of spring urged balls in depressions in raceways 166, 167 and the typewheels are accurately alignod by a nose 207 of a bail 201, Fig. 10, entering a recess 156 as the print head is lowered allowing a cam 221 to release an arm 212. Print head; inking arrangements; impression mechanism.-A print head 33 is mounted on a shaft 76 and urged to a raised inoperative position by a spring 124. After placing a forme for printing on guides over the print members the head 33 is lowered and becomes latched in an operative position by pawls 103, 104 engaging lugs 117, 118. The head mounts a dry inkimpregnated platen roller 86 of the porous type which is manually reciprocated over the forme along all the type wheels by a handle 89 and at the completion of its movement the roller 86 engages one of the pawls 103, 104 to disengage it from its lug 117, 118 and by a connecting plate disengage the other pawl so that a spring 124 can raise the head 33. During the printing stroke the roller 86 engages the card on its face remote from the type wheels and produces an impression only where the high pressure developed by the raised chambers of the type wheels is effective. Printing plate attachment. The printing plate 61, Fig. 20A, is preferably attached to its anvil 58 by flexible retainer means comprising elements 302 preferably of nylon held in complementary shaped holes 301 by flanges 305, 309. Spacer pads 308 leave a space for the plate 61 which has suitably shaped recesses in its edge to fit round and be held on the elements 302.
