Abstract

950,824. Friction brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Dec. 2, 1960 [Sept. 5, 1959], No. 30398/59. Headings F2E and F2K. A pivot between a rod and a lever comprises a bush surrounding the rod and bearing against the lever and having diametrically opposed arcuate surfaces mating with complementary surfaces on a ring axially movable with respect to the rod and backed by an adjuster nut. In a disc brake in which pads 11 are mounted on levers 12, 13 pivoted at 14 in the plane of the disc 10 bolted at its outer edge to the rim of a wheel, the pads are urged together by rotation of a lever 17 about a spindle 18 causing a pull in a rod 15. The rod 15 is pivotally connected to the lever 17 by a bush 21, seating against the end of a recess 20 in the lever, and coacting through part cylindrical bosses 22 engaging complementary recesses 23 in a ring 24 axially free on the rod and backed by a castellated adjuster nut 29. Relative rotation of the bush 21, ring 24 and lever 17 is restrained by a pin 26 in the lever and by a tongue 27 and groove 28 in the bush and ring respectively. The nut 29 is housed in a cylindrical shell 30 which forms a socket to rotationally receive the ring 24. A locking collar 32 normally restrained by lugs 32 engaging ways 34 in the recess 20 has ribs 35 to engage the grooves 36 of the nut, but the collar 32 may be displaced axially against springs 37 on wires 38 to permit adjustment of the nut. The ends of the wires 38 are anchored on a dust cover 40 held against a part-spherical surface of the lever by the tension in the wires. The brake may be mechanically or hydraulically actuated from the free end 41 of the lever 17.
