Abstract
949,969. Welding by fusion. WOODALLDUCKHAM CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. March 9, 1961 [March 9, 1960], No. 8364/60. Heading B3R. Metal pipes are butt welded end-to-end with the use of a flux backing. Granular flux is held in an annular channel sectioned cardboard container 8 having a paper cover which is burnt through to expose the flux during welding. Radial baffles may separate the container 8 into compartments or the flux may be located in pockets or bags in the container. The container 8 may be unsupported or may be located between the end walls 11, 13 of a carrier 10 which walls are brought together by remote actuation of a bolt 12 to axially compress the container to press the flux against the pipes 1, 2. The carrier 10 is retained in position by springs 16. In a modification the carrier holds an annular tube inflatable by compressed air to press the flux against the pipes. Flux submerged or gas shielded arc welding may be used. The pipes may be first tack welded and the assembly rotated as the welding is completed.
