A bobbin stripping and winding device for use with a loom includes a holder for receiving a substantially exhausted bobbin from the loom, a stripper for removing remmants of weft from a held bobbin and means of winding said bobbin with fresh weft whilst on said holder. A used bobbin in a shuttle 1, Fig. 1, is forced out by a wound bobbin from a supply magazine 3. The used bobbin passes down a slideway to a point where grippers 10a on a conveyer belt 10, carries the bobbin up to an assembly point 6 from which the bobbins are transferred by a feed lever 5 to a winding device 4. The waste yarn on the bobbin is first removed by rotating the bobbin in a direction B, Fig. 2, to unwind the yarn thereon, a rotary brush 19 being moved against the bobbin to assist in the clearing of the yarn which is then passed into a suction pipe 22. During the unwinding period the yarn . supply 13, extending to a wound bobbin 24, passes over a guide roller 21a that holds the yarn away from the bobbin that is being cleared. The wound bobbin 24 corresponds to the bobbin 11 in Fig. 1. When the bobbin being unwound has been cleared, it is rotated in the opposite direction A, the brush 19 moves away from the bobbin, and the guide-roller 21a moves to the position 21. This movement of the guide-roller moves the yarn supply to the line 13 and the bobbin holder is given a brief axial displacement to cause hooks 17,18, on a thread-finder ring 16, to catch the yarn and commence the winding operation. When the bobbin is fully wound it moves to the position 24 and the wound bobbin already at the position 4 is moved into the magazine 3, Fig. 1. A feeler 15 determines whether the yarn waste has been removed at the end of an unwinding operation. If the waste has not been completely removed the feeler controls a mechanism adapted to separate the not fully cleared bobbins from the cleared bobbins. Instead of the single winding device 4 there may be two, one for clearing and the other for winding a bobbin.
