Abstract

Welding rod or filler wire has an outer coating, inner core or integral filling of fluorocarbon polymer. The polymer is preferably polytetrafluoroethylene or fluoroethylene propylene but may be polyfluoroethylene propylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinyl fluoride, hexafluoropropylene, or a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene; mixtures of polymers can also be used. The polymer may be applied directly on to the surface of a solid welding rod, or the polymer coating may be applied over a pre-applied flux coating, or the polymer can be mixed with conventional fluxing material which mixture can then be coated on to a bare rod. The polymer may also form an inner core in a cylindrical welding rod, and in addition the rod itself can be fabricated by dispersing polymer within the rod by mixing metal powder with the polymer and pressure-moulding to shape. The consumable welding rod or filler wire may be brought into contact with the metal to be welded and heat applied thereto which heat decomposes the polymer to form an inert protective atmosphere about the weld area. In submerged arc-welding the area for welding can be dusted with polymer powder or covered with a liquid dispersion of the polymer; the electrode being positioned so that it contacts the weld area under a blanket of polymer. Polymer coatings on welding rods and filler wire can range in thickness from 0.1 -60 mils. Flux-polymer mixtures may be formed from ingredients such as lime or titania and flux coatings may contain from 0.1 -50.0% of fluorocarbon polymer. Metal-polymer mixtures should also contain from 0.1 - 50.0% of polymer with the polymer particles ranging in size from 5 - 700 microns.
