In a system for measuring the diameter of a wire or cable 269, Fig. 2, the cable is scanned by a beam of light and clock pulses are counted for the period during which the beam is interrupted. A circular scan, produced by a rotating eccentrically mounted lens 272 is used and the clock pulses are produced by a slotted disc 274, see also Fig. 3, and a photo-cell 279, the slots being non-uniformly spaced to compensate for the fact that the wire may be vibrating in a vertical direction. Various other scanning arrangements are mentioned in the Specification.
