Abstract

A heat-sealable sheet material comprises a support material coated with at least one layer of polylactide or a mixture of polylactide with one or more other polymers, e.g. cellulose nitrate or acetate, polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride, or polymethacrylate, or mixtures of one or more of these polymers. The layer containing the polylactide may contain a pre-dominant amount of polylactide. The support material may be cellulose foil, aluminium foil, polyethylene glycol terephthalate foil, paper which may be coated with polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride, or a laminate of aluminium and paper adhered together with polyvinyl acetate. The coating may be applied as a solution in, for example, ethyl acetate or a homologue, acetone, toluene, or mixtures thereof.
