Abstract
949,353. Door operating appliances. BERRY DOOR CORPORATION, and G. BERRY. March 13, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 9544/62. Heading E2M. [Also in Division F2] Operating mechanism for an overhead door 10 comprises support means 16, 18, 20 for the mechanism, an electric motor 24, a radio receiver-motor control unit 22 adapted to couple a source of electric power to the motor, and a housing 102 for the unit which is detachably mounted on the support means so that the housing with the unit therein can be removed for servicing. The sectional door 10 is supported by rollers 12 running in guide tracks 14 and is connected by an arm to a carriage 36, preferably made of nylon, driven by the motor 24 along a track 16 of rectangular tubular form (see Fig. 2) the bottom wall of which consists of two portions 16a, 16b turned up at 16c, 16d to form a pair of troughs with a longitudinal slot for the arm 38 therebetween. The drive connection comprises a chain 46 fastened at both ends to the carriage by pins 48 and passing freely intermediately of its ends through a longitudinal bore 36b in the carriage. At the forward end of the track 16 the chain passes over a nylon idler sheave 50 loaded axially of the track by a chain-tensioning and shockabsorbing spring 62 and at the rear end the chain engages a toothed driving sprocket 66 (Fig. 4) fixed to a driving spindle 68. At its lower end the spindle carries a clutch 86 which co-operates with a disc 84 of friction material fastened to a pulley 80 freely rotatable on the spindle and driven by the motor via a belt 82. The clutch is loaded by the weight of the pulley and by a spring 92. The unit 22 comprises a known type of radio-receiver which is adapted to provide an output signal in response to a signal from a transmitter on a motor vehicle to actuate a switching relay to complete the power circuit of the motor 24 which then opens the door. Receipt of another signal (or operation of a push-button switch) causes the unit to reverse the rotation of the motor to close the door. The unit also includes a limit switch 118 (Fig. 5) responsive to the position of the door to deenergise the motor at the end of the opening or closing movement. This switch has an operating arm 138 adjacent to the spindle 68 and controlled by a pair of nuts 140, 142 threaded on the spindle and held against rotation by a guide 144. The limit positions at which the switch operates can be adjusted by moving the guide 144 out of engagement with the nuts and then altering their axial positions on the spindle. The housing 102 of the unit is attached by a bracket to the track 16, and can be removed by disconnecting the bracket from the track, lowering the housing until the bracket clears the track, and then withdrawing the housing sideways. To facilitate the removal the power lead to the motor is plugged into a socket in the housing. An alternative form of clutch device is described (see Division F2) and includes means for adjusting the load at which the clutch slips. Oil which drips from the chain 46 is caught in the troughs in the track 16 and provides lubrication for the movement of the carriage.
