Abstract
949,053. Chucks. W. & T. AVERY Ltd. July 11, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24052/60. Heading B3B. A chuck for balancing [machines comprises closing means operated resiliently to effect clamping of a workpiece and a non-rotating release device controlled independently of the closing means, switching means preventing rotation of the driving spindle during operation of the release device. A base-plate 11 is provided with supports 30 for the workpiece 20 and jaw members 13 slidable in radial slots in the plate 11 have various attachments 18 for gripping the workpiece. The base-plate has a boss which is bolted to a spindle 6 which is rotated from a drive 7. The inner ends 13a of the jaws are bevelled and engage the tapered end of a collar 14 which is drawn downwards by disc springs 15 operating through an adjustable bolt 16 to clamp the work. The work is released by a non-rotating floating cylinder 22 surrounding the boss of the member 11 and having a pneumatically or hydraulically operated piston 25 which operates through pins 27 to lift the collar 14. An arrangement with a horizontal spindle is described.
