948,887. Magnetic core shift registers. AMPEX CORPORATION. May 15, 1962, No. 18605/62. Heading G4C. [Also in Division H3] Each stage of a shifting register comprises a pair of storage cores 21,22; 23, 24, . . . . . , adjacent cores being linked by input and output windings such as 21-0,22-I which are wound in opposite senses, the input winding 221 having fewer turns and including a rectifier 42 in series, and the two windings being-connected in parallel to a clock pulse source. The parallel windings linking the odd-to-even cores 21,22; 23, 24; . . . . . are connected in series to an old clock pulse source 34, and the remaining parallel windings are series connected with an even clock pulse source 36, the two pulse sources operating alternately. Data is introduced by an input 30 and the output is either applied serially to a sink 68 or is obtained in parallel form from windings 21A-26A. Operation depends on the principle that no change of state of a core takes place if a binary zero is stored in a core subjected to a clock pulse, and the whole of the clock pulse current is consequently by-passed from the input winding which includes a series rectifier. On the other hand if a binary one is stored, the core is switched by the clock pulse, and the back e.m.f. causes sufficient current to pass through the rectifier and input winding to switch the succeeding core to the binary one state.
