Abstract

Relates to the measurement of nuclear irradiation by earth substrata when bombarded by neutrons (see Division G1). The detector of irradiation comprising thermal neutrons may be of the scintillation kind, the luminophor being a lithium iodide crystal activated with europium; or a lithium oxide crystal activated with europium oxide and enriched with lithium 6; or a zinc-cadmium sulphide crystal loaded with boron or lithium. The detector may be kept cool by utilizing a Dewar flask containing ice, or the method of temperature stabilization described in U.S.A. Specification 2,824,233. Specifications 612,899 and 743,449 also are referred to.
