Abstract

Biologically active compositions which are readily converted to an aerosol or spray the particles of which are of substantially uniform size comprise at least one herbicide, fungicide, insecticide or like biological growth regulator, a liquid extending medium and a synthetic polymer which is swellable but substantially insoluble in the extending medium (which is preferably water) and which is present as swollen particles of a relatively uniform, predetermined small size e.g. 0.5 to 1.0 mm. Specified polymers are cross-linked monovalent cation (e.g. alkali metal, ammonium or quaternary ammonium) salts of polyacrylic acids, cross-linked polyglycols of an average molecular weight of from 1000 to 1,000,000 or more, sulphonated alkanyl and aromatic polymers e.g. sulphonated polyvinyl toluene and copolymers thereof with acrylonitrile, alkylacrylonitriles and methacrylates. The biologically active material may be a herbicide, fungicide, insecticide or growth regulant e.g. 2,4-di- and 2,4,5-tri-chlorophenoxyacetic acid and their esters DDT, dieldrin, eldrin, naphthalene acetic acid and its amide, indolebutric acids, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,2-dichloropropionic acid, trichloroacetic acid, dinitro-o-sec-butylphenol, aminotriazole, tetraethylphosphate, o,o-diethyl - o - 2 - (ethyl thio) ethyl thiophosphate, ferric dimethyl dithiocarbamate and the o,o-dimethyl dithiophosphate of diethyl mercaptosuccinate.
