Abstract

947,587. Polyurethane elastomers. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 29, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 5696/63. Divided ou of 947,586. Heading C3R. A low temperature curing elastomer comprises the reaction product of a mouldable reaction mixture of an organic di-isocyanate, a liquid polyalkylene ether glycol having a molecular weight between 750 and 4,500, and sufficient of a trifunctional co-reactant which acts as a crosslinker to provide a cross-linked structure, the mixture having an isocyanate to hydroxyl ratio of 0À09 : 1 to 1À4 : 1, and an organo metallic catalyst in the presence of which the reaction mixture converts to a solid elastomer substantially free from further reactive site in a single continuous reaction. Specified tin catalysts are dibutyl tin diacetate, dibutyl tin dilaurate, dibutyl tin di-2- ethyl hexoate, dibutyl tin oxide, dibutyl tin monomethoxy methyl maleate, dibutyl tin sulphide, tributyl tin 2-ethyl hexoate, mono-butyl tin tri- 2-ethyl hexoate, triphenyl tin hydroxide, bis (tributyl tin) oxide, bis (tributyl tin) tetrapropenyl succinate, bis (tributyl tin)- n - nonyl succinate and bis (tributyl tin) malonate. Inert fillers e.g. rottenstone, sand, volcanic clays, asbestos fibres and powdered polystrene may be present. In the example, polyproplyene glycol is reacted with toluene diisocyanate and trimethylol propane in the presence of dibutyl tin dilaurate, powdered clay and rottenstone.
