Abstract

947,517. Torsional vibration dampers; securing fans on shafts; bolts. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A.G. April 8, 1960 [April 8,1959: April 23, 1959], No. 12607/60. Headings F2H, F2S and F2U. [Also in Division F1] A torsional vibration damper 7, Fig. 1, is attached by a bolt 9 to the end of a crankshaft 1 of an air-cooled engine and is arranged coaxially with and adjacent the air inlet duct 5<SP>1</SP> of the cooling fan 5. The single bolt 9 retains the electric generator 2, the fan 5 and the vibration damper 7 on the end of the crank-shaft 1. The generator 2 is mounted directly on the tapered end of the crank-shaft 1 and has a flange 4 on which the fan 5 is centred and bolted as at 4a. A central hole 5<SP>11</SP> in the fan 5 locates the hub 6 of the vibration damper 7, which is mounted on an enlarged centring stem 9<SP>11</SP> of the bolt 9 and is held against a washer 8 within the locating hole 5<SP>11</SP>. The damper comprises an annular inertia member 7 mounted on the hub 6 with an intermediate elastic ring 10 and retained between a flange 6<SP>11</SP> and end plate 6<SP>1</SP> with intermediate friction discs 11. The ring 10 may be of a material which is highly resistant to abrasion, such as polyurethane and the friction discs may be of low friction, laminated plastic material. In another arrangement, a modified central bolt 12, Fig. 2, has a disc portion 12<SP>1</SP> which is centrally located in the aperture 5<SP>11</SP> of the fan 5 and carries a modified vibration damper 18 on an extension 13 on which the damper sleeve 15 is retained by a nut 16 on the threaded extension 14 of the bolt 12. In this example the inertia member 18 of the damper is resiliently mounted on an elastic sleeve 19 which is vulcanised to a disc 17 welded on the sleeve 15.
