947,487. Measuring angular displacement electrically. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION March 26, 1960, No. 10783/60. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G4] In a measuring system Fig. 3 the "fine" angular position of a shaft within one tooth-pitch is represented at terminals 81, 82, 91, 92 by four A. C. amplitude significant signals, these being obtained by four pairs of diametrically opposite sensing heads 611,611a; 611b,611c; 612, 612a; and 612b, 612c, the heads being spacially phaseshifted from each other, with respect to a tooth pitch, by 90 degrees. The coarse position of the shaft is obtained by brush-sensed conductive and non-conductive regions 800 &c. The four A.C. signals can be suitably combined and attenuated (Fig. 4 not shown) to give a digital fine indication or, before digitisation, they can be suitably combined to produce a corresponding phasesignificant A.C. signal. (Fig. 5 not shown). A modified form of tooth is described (Fig. 3a not shown).
