Abstract

Di - and tri - chloro - benzonitriles are produced by passing a gas mixture consisting of one or more di- and/or trichlorotoluenes, ammonia, oxygen, and nitrogen (or other diluent) over a vanadium oxide catalyst maintained at a temperature between 300 DEG and 450 DEG C. If a mixture of isomeric di- and trichlorotoluenes (obtained by the catalytic chlorination of toluene or o-chlorotoluene) is treated with ammonia in the manner described above, a product is obtained from which 2,6-dichloro-benzonitrile and 2,3,6 - trichloro -benzonitrile may be separated by distillation, or crystallisation from a hydrocarbon or an aliphatic alcohol. The vanadium oxide, which may be mixed with oxides of chromium, molybdenum or thorium, is preferably employed on activated aluminium oxide, as carrier. The chloro-benzonitriles have use in compositions for the control of plant growth. Specification 862,863 is referred to.ALSO:A composition for influencing the growth of plants consists of 2,3,6-tri-chloro-benzonitrile and an inert solid or liquid carrier. A dust preparation, for controlling premature sprouting of potatoes, consists of 4% of the active substance mixed with 16% of kieselguhr and 80% of magnesium marlstone. A specific example of a liquid preparation comprises 25% of the active substance dissolved in 61% of xylene and 6% of methyl ethyl ketone with the addition of 8% of an emulsifying agent. Wettable powders may be made up using wetting agents, such as fatty alcohol sulphates or alkyl-aryl sulphonates, and dispersion agents such as lignin sulphonate. Specified forms are wettable powders, miscible oils, solutions and dusts. Specification 862,863 is referred to.ALSO:Premature sprouting of seed potatoes is retarded by applying to the seed potatoes a composition which contains 2,3,6-trichlorobenzonitrile as active substance together with an inert solid or liquid carrier material, e.g. talc, kieselguhr or magnesium marlstone, or a mixture of them or xylene. A suitable dust composition contains 4% by weight of active substance, mixed with 16% of kieselguhr and 80% of magnesium marlstone. Specification 862,863 is referred to.
