Abstract

946,769. Geophysical prospecting. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 1, 1960 [April 3, 1959], No. 11597/60. Heading H4D. In a method of producing a seismic record substantially free from unwanted signals due to reverberations in subterranean layers, original signals (either from a " live " survey or from an extant seismic record) are combined in predetermined ratios with auxiliary signals which are differently time - displaced original signals. The disclosure includes a mathematical discussion of the effects of reverberation in the cases of a single water layer, a number of " non- coupled " layers, and a number of " coupled " layers, Figs. 1, 2 and 3 (none shown); layers are considered to be " coupled " if when taken together they give rise to reverberations within the bandwidth 5 to 300 c/s. In one embodiment the original signal Go(t) and time-delayedsignals G 0 (t - T1), G 0 (t - 2T 1 ), where T 1 corresponds to twice the depth of a single water layer and may be known, measured or estimated, are combined in an amplitude-doubling amplifier 11 after multiplication by respective factors ¢, r 1 and r 1 <SP>2</SP>/ 2 , where r 1 is an assumed or known reflexion coefficient. It is stated that the output signal G 1 (t) when recorded gives a seismogram substantially free of the effects of reverberation in the single water layer. If r 1 is negative, an inverting circuit 13 is used. In cases where r 1 is not accurately known, the process is repeated for a number of probable values and the most " legible " ensuing seismogram is chosen. Illustrations of recording before and after correction are given, Fig. 5 (not shown). More complicated examples, e.g. for several layers are described, Figs. 6 and 7 (neither shown). Photo-electric interpretation of a variable-area or variabledensity may be employed; delay lines may replace the magnetic reproduction arrangements; and the final " seismogram " may be a series of numerals.
