946,662. Automatic tension control. A. WINDMOLLER, and M. GENERICH, [trading as WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER]. Feb. 26, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959; April 22, 1959], No. 6899/60. Heading G3R. In a system for automatically reducing variations in tension of a web of material passing through a processing machine, currents, respectively proportional to the magnitude and rate of variation of tension and both derived from a movable core transformer operated through a pivoted lever by a constant force applying means suspended in a loop of the material, control the feed of the web through the processing machine. Variations in the tension of a web 1 being unwound from a reel 2 in a printing machine by feed rollers 6, 7 are detected by movements of a roller 13 which, through a pivoted lever 15, adjusts an iron core 21 of a transformer 22 and varies the current in a control winding 38 of a magnetic amplifier 40 so that the energization of an electromagnetic brake 5 on reel 2 is modified to restore the tension to a value selected by the positioning of a sliding weight 17. Movements of lever 15 are damped by an adjustable hydraulic dashpot 25 and a second control winding 39 of magnetic amplifier 40 energized through a condenser 49 introduces a rate component of control. In a modification the output of the amplifier controls the energization of an electric motor or electromagnetic coupling and a brake associated with a supplementary drive applied to a cooling cylinder through a differential gear. The energization of the brake is delayed by a resistance capacity network. Valve or transistor amplifiers are also referred to.
