Abstract

946,169. Automatic speed control. LOEWE OPTA A.G. March 19, 1962 [March 21, 1961], No. 10366/62. Heading G3R. In a synchronizing arrangement for the recording and playback of television signals on magnetic tape, a motor driving the recording heads is driven in synchronizm with the said signals and a motor driving the magnetic tape is uncontrolled, while on playback, either (a) the head motor is controlled by synchronizing pulses and the tape motor is uncontrolled or (b) the tape motor is controlled by synchronizing pulses and the head motor is uncontrolled. As shown, Fig. 1, a recording head 4 driven by a motor 5 receives signals from television set 1 over an oscillator 2 and an amplifier 3. The signals are also applied to a phase shifter 6 and to a phase reference control 13 which also receives a signal which is dependent upon the speed'of the motor 5 and which is derived from a photo-cell 11 illuminated at each revolution by the light reflected from a-source 10 by a mirror 9 rotating with the head 4. The rotation of the head 4 is thus compared with the television signal, any divergence producing a control output from phase shifter 6 which is applied over an amplifier 7 to motor 5 to restore synchronizm. A head 14 for recording synchronizing pulses on the tape also receives the signal from amplifier 7. The tape is driven by an uncontrolled synchronous motor 8 which is connected directly to the mains supply. On playback, Fig. 2, the tape motor 21 is connected directly to the mains supply, and the motor 16, driving the head 15 producing the signal applied to a television set 20, is kept in synchronizm with the signal by means of the synchronizing pulses which are picked up by a head 22 and applied to the motor 16 over an amplifier 23, a phase shifter 24, and a further amplifier 25. The embodiment having an uncontrolled head motor and a controlled tape motor is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown).
