Abstract

Rubbery polymers derived from one or more unsaturated hydrocarbons are reacted in solution in an inert organic solvent with a hydroperoxide, an aldehyde or aldehyde forming substance, or a mercaptan in the presence of oxygen to obtain an activated polymer, which is then reacted with a polymerizable unsaturated monomer to form a graft polymer. Rubbery polymers specified are homopolymers of isobutylene and butadiene, and copolymers such as isobutylene/butadiene, isobutylene/isoprene and ethylene/1-butene. Polymerizable monomers specified are styrene, vinyl diphenyl and naphthalene, acrylic acid, amide, esters, nitriles and chloride, vinyl ketones, vinyl carbazole, vinyl pyridines, butadiene and hanologues thereof, chlorobutadiene, cyclopentadiene and alkylcyclopentadienes. Hydroperoxides specified are tert.-butyl, cumene, cyclohexanone and cycloalkyl hydroperoxides. If desired, the hydroperoxide may be formed in situ by treating a mixture of polymer and an isoparaffin with oxygen. Mercaptans specified are mercaptoacetic acid and the reaction products of hydrogen sulphide with ethylene oxide, sulphide or imine. Aldehydes or aldehyde-forming substance specified are formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen peroxide. In the case of polymers activated by aldehydes the polymerization of the grafting monomer may be initiated by metal salts, e.g. those of cobalt, copper, cerium, iron and manganese. When the resulting products contain double bonds they may be vulcanised. The examples describe the following processes: (1) treating an isobutylene/ isoprene copolymer with tert.-butyl hydroperoxide and grafting methyl acrylate thereon in solution in hexane to yield a vulcanisable product; (2) as in (1) applied to an isobutylene/ piperylene copolymer; (3) treating an ethylene/ 1-butene copolymer with tert.-butyl hydroperoxide and grafting acrylic acid thereon in solution in hexane; (4) as in (3) but using an isobutylene/isoprene copolymer to yield a product which reacts with phenyl isocyanate; (5) treating an isobutylene/butadiene copolymer with mercaptoacetic acid and air and grafting methyl acrylate thereon in the absence of solvent; and (6) treating an isobutylene/isoprene copolymer with paraformaldehyde and (in latex form) grafting methyl acrylate thereon to yield a vulcanisable product.
