Abstract

945,985. Opening containers. A. R. D'ANDREA, and W. F. BECKER. Nov. 14, 1961, No. 40772/61. Heading B8D. An end wall 214 of a container may be stamped from metal sheet and is opened by means of a pull tab 227 cut or stamped in the end wall. An interrupted slit 224 extends round the end inside the peripheral seam and a frangible sheet 234, e.g. of aluminium foil or plastics material, is secured by a layer of adhesive 235 to the inner side of the end wall so that, on pulling the tab 227, the whole of the container end may be removed. The slit may be replaced by a weakened portion in the metal end wall. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), a sectoral opening is formed in the container end, the pull tab being joined to the end wall either at the apex of the sector or on its curved outer edge, Fig. 13 (not shown). Again, Fig. 23, a strip of metal having a lower leg 332 is applied to an aperture formed in the end wall of a container, and a frangible sheet secured on the underside, so that the strip may be torn away to break the frangible sheet and form a pouring opening. A spur 340 pierces the sheet, as the tab is bent backwards, and before the main aperture is made, so releasing any gas formed in the container. The tab is held down by means of a tongue 336 which passes through a hole 339 in the tab. In the form illustrated in Fig. 28, the lower leg 361 of the tab strip underlies and is broader than a preformed opening 355 in the container end wall. Spurs 367 on the lower leg 361 are initially flat, but when the tab is pulled upwards they are forced down by the edges of the opening 355 thereby piercing a frangible sheet secured below.
