Abstract

Emulsion paints are prepared by adding to a pigment paste of one or more pigments in water a binder comprising 0.5 to 10 parts per part by weight of pigment of an aqueous emulsion of a terpolymer of 60 to 90% wt. of vinyl acetate, 3 to 20% of an acrylic ester and 3 to 20% of a diester of maleic acid, the emulsion containing 40% to 65% by weight of polymer. Specified acrylic esters are butyl and 2-ethylhexylacrylate; specified maleic esters are dioctyl and dibutyl maleate; specified pigments are titanium dioxide, lithopone, china clay, blanc fixe, talc and mica. Optional ingredients mentioned are dispersants, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium dioctylsulphosuccinate, and stabilizers and thickeners e.g. starches and water soluble salts of polyacrylates, polymethacrylates and partially substituted celluloses.
