Abstract
Vinyl addition polymers which comprise at least one ester of methacrylic acid with C 1 - 8 alkanols and having substituents each of which bears on adjacent carbon atoms a hydroxyl radical and an amino radical bearing at least one active hydrogen atom, said amino radicals in said substituents containing from 0.01 to 1.0% of amino nitrogen based on the weight of the polymer, and said polymers having a glass transition temperature of from 35 to 100 DEG C. and a degree of polymerization of at least 1,200, may be used as adhesives. The polymers may be prepared by copolymerizing methacrylate esters, e.g. methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-amyl, 3-methylpentyl, n-hexyl, 2-methylhexyl, n-heptyl and n-octyl methacrylate, with epoxy monomers, e.g. glyeidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, glycidyl sorbate, glycidyl ricinoleate, glycidyl vinyl phthalate, glycidyl allyl phthalate, glycidyl allyl maleate, allyl a ,b -epoxyisovalerate, allyl glycidyl ether, butadiene monoepoxide, vinyl cyclohexene epoxide and glycidyl oxyethyl vinyl sulphide, and reacting the copolymer with ammonia or a primary alkylamino or alkanolamine, e.g. methylamine, ethylamine, isopropylamine, n-butylamine, isobutylamine, stearylamine, cyclohexylamine, naphthylamine, aniline, toluidine, 2-aminofuran, furfurylamine, ethanolamine, propanolamine, 2-amino-1-butanol, benzylamine, o-propylaminophenol, a -methoxypropylamine, a -aminopropionitrile, t-butylamine, t-octylamine, soya amine and tall amine. Amination may be effected in a solvent, e.g. toluene, benzene, cyclohexane, octane, butanol, pentanol, isopropanol and ethoxyethanol, and product diluted with further solvent for application as adhesive. Examples describe the polymerization in toluene and isopropanol in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile, which is added incrementally, of (1 and 5) glycidyl, methyl and n-butyl methacrylates; (2) ethyl and glycidyl methacrylates; (3) methyl, n-hexyl and glycidyl methacrylates; (4) methyl, ethyl and glycidyl methacrylates; and the reaction of the products with ammonia; (6) methyl, n-butyl and glycidyl methacrylates and the reaction of the product with methylamine; and (7) methyl, n-butyl and glycidyl methacrylates and the reaction of the product with ethanolamine. The adhesives may be used in the preparation of laminates.
