Abstract

p-Xylene can be crystallized from a solution of a mixture which also contains o- and m-xylenes and ethylbenzene by direct contact with a non-miscible coolant liquid, e.g. an aqueous brine at - 40 DEG C., which has a density sufficiently different from the mother liquid for easy decantation of the mother liquors and coolant.ALSO:Concentrated solutions are crystallized by direct contact with a non-miscible, coolant liquid, which is chemically inert, does not emulsify and with a density such that the liquids can be decanted easily from the crystals. The process may be performed in an apparatus (not shown) with several compartments to which coolant can be added while the crystals and liquid move under the influence of a screw conveyer.
