Abstract

944,287. Motor vehicle steering gear. HUMBER Ltd., and F. A. CAINE. June 2, 1961 [June 2, 1960], No. 19572/60. Heading B7H. In apparatus for adjusting the length of the steering column on a motor vehicle, the column comprises a fixed outer support tube 11 housing a telescopic steering shaft comprising telescoping shafts 12, 14. The outer shaft 12 is mounted in tube 11 by bearings 13 and the inner shaft 11 carries a steering wheel 15 at its upper end and at its lower end is split axially to form four tongues 16 which are internally tapered to enclose a conical end 19 on a long bolt 18. A large hand-wheel 20, screwed, on the bolt 18, may be rotated to expand the tongues 16 and clamp shaft 14 within shaft 12. Slackening wheel 20 and applying an axial blow will free the shafts. A resilient member may be inserted beneath wheel 20 so that exceptional axial force, as in an accident, will free the clamping device and allow the column to collapse. In an alternative embodiment a single steering shaft is splined for axial movement within a steering wheel hub and an annular conical locking member splined on the shaft is clamped within a taper-end surrounding tube mounted within the hub. Alternatively a tubular single steering shaft may be splined within the hub, which carries a split-end tube- and-bolt arrangement as in Fig. 1, which fits within the tubular shaft. A torque-limiting slipping device may be provided to limit the extent to which the mechanism may be clamped.
