Abstract
943,881. Making girders; corrugating. DOMINION BRIDGE CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1962 [Jan. 17, 1961], No. 663/62. Headings B3A and B3E. A machine for automatically making lightweight trusses each having a pair of chords of strip material and a wire web welded to said chords comprises a pair of cold-forming units to shape said chords from continuous strip, a web-bender to form said web from continuous wire, guide means for said chord and web, a common drive for said bender and coldforming units, two resistance welders to weld said web to said chords, a carriage for said welders and mechanism associated with said drive to advance said carriage at the speed of the chords during welding, a device to return said carriage after the welding operation, a flying saw and means actuated by said truss to cut the formed truss into predetermined lengths. The truss consists of a web 10 and two chords 11 which may have various crosssectional shapes, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown), and be formed with slits for receiving nails or screws. Coils of strip 50, Fig. 7, feed into coldforming units 51 and wire from a coil 52 passes through a straightener 54 and then into the web-bender 53. The formed components are brought together, straightened and the chords are then guided by form-fitting rolls 68 to bring the chords parallel and spaced apart in a horizontal plane, with the formed web therebetween. Two resistance welders 70 are mounted on a frame 71 which is driven in the direction of movement of the truss by a clutch and chain drive from the cold-forming machine. The clutch is operated by a plate cam also driven by the cold-forming machine. At each panel spacing in the truss the clutch is engaged and after a predetermined forward movement during which the welding cycle is completed the clutch disengages and an air cylinder returns the carriage. A flying saw carriage 86 is actuated when the leading end of the truss strikes a length gauge 85. The cut-off section is conveyed on a driven roller runway to an airless paint booth 100 and is then discharged on to drying skids 101. The web-bender consists of two chains of links 120 (Fig. 13), in which each link contains a tongue 121 which bears axially against a cam-plate 123. The wire 10 is engaged and bent by a pin 138, projecting from each tongue. Each link also has two bending anvils 142 which produce bending of the wire close to the pin so that the diagonal members of the web are straight.
